MoCCA 2012
Thanks to everyone who came out on Wednesday! I’ll have a more substantial post about the release party up later.
Once again I’ll be missing MoCCA but my presence will be haunting the tables because I have work debuting in two anthologies. Secret Prison #666 has a jam drawing I did with Keenan Marshall Keller and Future Shock, the full-color sf anthology edited by Josh Burrgraf, has my two-page story “Hawk”. Secret Prison #666 Kickstarter
Secret Prison #666 is debuting this April at MoCCA 2012! This issue’s a little different from the previous ones – instead of single-page comics, it’s a bunch of double-page team-ups selected by editor Ian Harker and guest editor Pat Aulisio, the editors of RUB THE BLOOD (speaking of which, RUB THE BLOOD is now available in Yeah Dude Comics online store).

Pat and Ian paired me up with the bad-ass cartoonist Keenan Marshall Keller. We’re both total texture geeks but Keenan’s way more out there than me and is inspiring me to be grosser and more visceral with my drawings than I usually am. I’m loving what we’ve got brewing for SP#666! You can see what I mean about the similarities and differences in our styles in this drawing he did for the Monster Show at Domy Books:

Ian and Pat are raising funds to print SP#666 via a Kickstarter campaign.
They’ve already met their funding goal for their initial print run and now they’re trying to meet a secondary goal to get even more copies printed. Prizes include SP#666, RUB THE BLOOD, and an 1/8th page ad drawn by myself.

RUB THE BLOOD Debuts this Saturday at the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics Fest
This Saturday, December 3rd, from noon to 9pm at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is the Brooklyn Comics and Graphics fest. Pat Aulisio and Ian Harker will be there with Rub the Blood, an art comics tribute to the Image revolution with two pages by me alongside a whole host of excellent artists (full list and longer explanation here, Robot6 article here, interview with Pat and Ian here, Rob Liefeld endorsement here). I won’t be at BCGF but tons of other RUB THE BLOOD cartoonists will be.

Final E.A.S.T. 2011 Weekend at the Hensel Hypercastle
Hey y’all, this upcoming weekend is your last chance to come by the Hensel Hypercastle during E.A.S.T. 2011 to see Glade and I’s art. Just like last weekend, we’ll be open from 11am to 6pm, Saturday and Sunday. We’re Stop #121 on the tour, 1807 East 22nd Street.

Here’s the front door. We’ve got Glade’s Welcome to the Hypercastle print on the door, a new artwork by her above the TV, our Christmas tree (out a bit early, we know), and a spinner rack of Glademade cards.
Our coffee table is chockful of comics. Most of them are for reading but a few are for sale. I’ve got comics I’ve drawn (such as my latest, VORTEX), comics by fellow GCPM members (such as Kid Space Heater by Josh Burggraf and Lords ov thee Black Sun by Mike Miles), two issues of the GCP’s poetry/comics anthology Catch Up, and various issues of anthologies that I’ve been in (Math Fiction, Candy or Medicine, Smoke Signal, Taffy Hips, and Secret Prison). Come by, chill out on our couch, and feel free to flip through everything.
We’ve got almost all of the prints from our Hypercastle print show at Austin Books and Comics and every print we had for sale last year.
I switched out the artwork on my walls in my studio.
Glade has some birthday banners on the walls of her studio.
I hope to see some of y’all this weekend!

SPX 2011: Secret Prison #5 Debut
Y’all are only getting one post this week because I was out of town for Labor Day weekend, hanging with the Kentucky branch of the GCPM. I’ll have more detailed posts about that for y’all soon, but right now I want to talk about the debut of Secret Prison #5 this weekend at SPX 2011 in Bethesda, Maryland.
As I’ve mentioned, I’m the co-featured artist for this issue, which means I drew the back cover. Here’s a shot of Ian Harker, the editor, holding up the published ish:
My comix hero, Tom Scioli, is the featured artist. He drew the cover and a four-page interior comic.
The issue will be at the free table all of SPX.
Also debuting will be a new mini by Pat Aulisio called “C’mon Man” that features his faceless guy and the bear/deer/lion god he rides.

Flower Hypercastle by Glade Hensel and Ads in Secret Prison #5
Hey y’all, sorry I made a mistake with my blogging and released an incomplete post early on Monday instead of today. Here’s the post that I intended to publish this morning:
Here’s a print that Glade made for our show at Austin Books (Speaking of our show, if any of y’all want to see our prints at Austin Books and haven’t yet, this week is your last chance! Tomorrow is the last day.):
This print is called “Flower Hypercastle.” It’s a digital print of a gouache painting. This past Saturday Glade and I just hung out at home, painted, and watched Mad Men. I spend so much time working on comics on the computer that I forget how relaxing and visceral painting can be. I’m going to try to make painting more a part of my regular art routine.
Something I’m excited about but haven’t mentioned on here yet is that I’m the co-featured artist for Secret Prison #5. It’s especially exciting because I love the work of the featured artist, Tom Scioli. Gødland is one of my favorite comics. I’m bringing it up now because it’s debuting at SPX in a week and a half and they’re looking for people to buy ad space before this Sunday, Sept 3rd. Here’s an information sheet (with a small preview of Scioli’s dope cover):

Secret Prison #4 at MoCCA 2011
Mini-Comics Day is not the only thing happening this upcoming weekend – it’s also MoCCA 2011 in NYC. Although I was able to attend in 2008, 2009, and 2010, I won’t be there this year :’,’,’,’,'( (Although I can’t really be all that sad, because Glade and I’s wedding and subsequent honeymoon is the reason why.) However, one of my comics will be in attendance. Thanks to everyone’s support of Secret Prison in 2011 on Kickstarter, Pat Aulisio will have fresh, free copies of #4 at Table L5, which he’s sharing with Mike Turzanski and Tom Smo.

Please Help Fund Secret Prison for 2011
Secret Prison, a free comics newsprint anthology out of Philly, needs your help to continue in 2011. In 2010, they funded their three issues with three separate Kickstarters. For 2011, however, they’ve decided to try to raise all of the funds with one Kickstarter. They’re over halfway to their goal and they have until 11:59pm EDT on Sunday, April 3rd to raise the rest. Check it out here.
If you pledge, you can get old issues of Secret Prison (I had something in #2) or subscribe to all their publications for 2011 (I’ll be in #4 and I plan to submit to the rest). You can also get rad art, like this:
