I saw Moon Monday night.
It was really refreshing. The last hard sci fi movie that I remember seeing was Sunshine, and that kind of fell apart at the end. Moon, directed by Duncan Jones, definitely follows the tradition established by 2001 and Tarkovsky’s Solaris, while also managing to throw in some humanizing bits of humor.
Hi, you left a comment on my bog so i jumped over here to check you out of course. And saw we may share a similar taste in sci fi movies! I have not seen Moon but want to now. and i thought District 9 was an interesting, pretty thrilling story for the first 45 minutes into it devolved into The Chase. GoddAMN THESE 50 minute final shooting gallery chase scenes. All the exciting ideas go out the window. Sunshine was awesome! until, as you said, it came unhinged in the end. i need to see it again, but it was so grounded(funny for a space movie). It had all this room to breathe. And i recently read Solaris the book and enjoyed it. I need to see the Tarkovsky version again. Between that and Stalker, Tarkovsky changed my whole view of cinema. oh, and i really liked the old line-free color mush mounds, maybe even better than the finished drawings, but they are cool too!

Hey thanks for checking out my blog! I hope you like Moon, one thing I didn’t mention here is that the special effects are really well done – no CGI!
Have you read any other Stanislaw Lem books? His Memoirs of a Space Traveler are hilarious.
As far as Tarkovsky goes, now that you mention it, I think that I like Stalker better than Solaris, but it’s been a while since I’ve seen both. The feeling of weirdness that he manages to put into the Zone is so tangible it made my skin crawl. Have you ever read the book that it’s based on? I’ve never tracked it down.
I think I like the line-free mush mounds better too, now that it’s all done.
