Photo by Glade Hensel.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/roughhousecomics.squarespace.com\/\">Rough House Comics Collective<\/a> will be selling some of my comics (<em>Cold Heat Special<\/em> #10, <em>Tranz<\/em> #2, <em>Vortex<\/em> #3, and <em>Vortex<\/em> #4) at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/HIBFest\">Houston Indie Book Fest<\/a> (AKA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.menilfest.com\/indie-book-festival-1\/\">the Indie Book Fair at the Menil Fest if you&#8217;d like to avoid the Facebook page<\/a>) this Saturday May 3rd on the Menil lawn. They&#8217;ll be debuting the second issue of the <em>Rough House Comics<\/em> anthology. While you&#8217;re there, if you haven&#8217;t been, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.menil.org\/twombly-gallery.html\">I recommend that you visit the Cy Twombly gallery<\/a>. I&#8217;ve also been thinking about my role as an amateur critic. With Amazon and Goodreads, just reviewing individual books doesn&#8217;t seem like enough. I want to compare, make connections, look at and define categories. But until I get around to realizing my ambitions, I recommend that you read the chilling fantasy-horror <em>Mother of Winter<\/em> by Barbara Hambly (not sure if it&#8217;ll stand on its own if you haven&#8217;t read the preceding Dark trilogy, but plotwise, it&#8217;s a separate book); the nautical fantasy trilogy <em>Liveship Traders<\/em> by Robin Hobb; and the speculative biology hard sf novella <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rifters.com\/real\/shorts.htm\">&#8220;The Island&#8221; by Peter Watts, which you can read for free, alongside the rest of his backlist, on his site<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;ve neglected posting recent reviews of individual <em>Vortex<\/em> issues and the complete saga, so here&#8217;s a bundle, with quotes and links:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/highlowcomics.blogspot.com\/2014\/04\/revising-myths-and-twisting-sci-fi.html\">&#8220;I find the zip-a-tone in particular to be hypnotic and beautiful in its own strange way, just as I&#8217;m drawn to Cardini&#8217;s comics despite his obvious influences&#8221; &ndash; Rob Clough reviewing <em>Vortex<\/em> #4 and <em>Tranz<\/em> #2 on his High-Low blog<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.opticalsloth.com\/?p=22546\">&#8220;It\u2019s a beautiful mind fuck of a book&#8221; &ndash; Kevin Bramer reviewing <em>Vortex<\/em> #3 at Optical Sloth<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/impossiblebooks.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/24\/william-cardinis-vortex\/\">&#8220;<em>Vortex<\/em>&rsquo;s greatest strength&#8230;is it\u2019s thematic subtlety, allowing un-narrated action to evoke themes of self-knowledge and self-determination&#8221; &ndash; Taylor writing up the complete series on the Impossible Books blog (full disclosure: Impossible Books sells <em>Vortex<\/em> in their distro)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/think.faesthetic.com\/archives\/7807\">&#8220;Enjoyable art, but music-video level story telling&#8221; &ndash; Ulises Farinas reviewing <em>Vortex<\/em> #1 on Think Faest<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mondaysuicide.tumblr.com\/post\/66961240739\/i-got-tuesday-the-4th-volume-of-william-cardinis\">&#8220;I don\u2019t believe in originality, but his work is at least personal and doesn\u2019t make concessions of any kind&#8221; &ndash; Gabriel Corbera, creator of Monday Suicide, reviewing the complete series<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve got some updates for y&#8217;all: I added Cold Heat Special #10 to my online shop.
