The entrance is in an alley.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Anyone can go to LVL1, tinker with tech, and make things; but what makes it really special is that the members pool funds to purchase special maker equipment, such as this laser cutter:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image2.jpg\" alt=\"laser cutter\"><br \/>Nick offered to cut one of my drawings out and mail it to me. What should I get cut out?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more Click here to see the rest of their equipment -->They also have a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makerbot.com\/\">Makerbot<\/a> 3D printer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image3.jpg\" alt=\"Makerbot 3D printer\"><br \/>You may remember Makerbot from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.colbertnation.com\/the-colbert-report-videos\/388966\/june-08-2011\/bre-pettis\">Colbert Report<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nick showed me his project:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image4.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Sturtzel LVL1 project\"><br \/>He&#8217;s making a custom synth with hexagonal keys. He&#8217;s using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arduino.cc\/\">Arduino<\/a> to program the inputs and mold casting to make the keys.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>LVL1 also has a huge, un-air-conditioned space:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image5.jpg\" alt=\"LVL1 outdoor space\"><br \/>To the left of the center you can see a large balloon. <a href=\"http:\/\/whitestarballoon.com\/\">White Star Balloons<\/a> are trying to build a semi-autonomous balloon that can cross the Atlantic.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The outdoor part of LVL1 also has this interesting ceiling:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image6.jpg\" alt=\"LVL1 outdoor ceiling\"><br \/>The rumor is that the LVL1 space used to be a massage parlor.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jeff, Chuch, Nick, and <a href=\"http:\/\/pixelexploder.com\/\">Rob Bozwell<\/a> jammed in the outdoor space while I doodled inside:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image7.jpg\" alt=\"LVL1 jam session\"><br \/>They played noise rock, of course.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>LVL1 also has a basement space with computer parts that are up for grabs, a server, a woodshop, a CNC milling machine, and a room full of the undead:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hypercastle.com\/images\/2011-09-27_image8.jpg\" alt=\"zombie room\"><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I wish there was something like this in Austin (or is there and I don&#8217;t know about it?). I know there&#8217;s the Robot Group (or is there still? all the links that come up in Google are defunct) but what I&#8217;m really thinking of is a workspace with all this dope equipment.
