I came up with the name for my Domy Houston show on Wednesday. I was originally going to title it after one of my paintings, The Rise of the Miizzzards, but then I decided that I didn’t want to restrict my show to just paintings of Miizzzards. So, I came up with something more generic: Hypermetamorphologies. After talking with my d00d Paul DeVay, I shortened it to Hypermorphologies. Later, Glade convinced me to (rightly) truncate it further, and so I settled on Hypermorph. Heavy lifting done, I wrote up the statement and my bio, and selected my promo images. You can see the whole package here.
I still need to come up with a poster image for the show, so I’ve been doing some sketches of hypermorphs. Here are the first two that I did:
I’m going to have a show at Domy Books Houston from Sept 25th to Oct 21st. The opening is going to be on Sept 25th from 7 to 9 pm. I’m going to be working on it as much as possible until then. I have a long list of things that I want to make but not enough time to make all of them.
Here’s a sketch I made for a painting for the show:
Right now I’m thinking that the show is going to be paintings from a battle between the Miizzzard and the Wojrollox. I want to paint a lot of weird transformations, intensely patterned and colorful costumes, and strange worlds.
My buddy Rand is helping to put on this awesome event this weekend here in Austin (which I just realized is already halfway over as I post this):

2009 was a great year here at the Hypercastle! Here’s some of the highlights:
2010 is already shaping up to be a great year, here’s hoping that it’ll blow 2009 out of the water! I’ve got several projects in work with some awesome and skilled creative people that I’ll be talking about as they manifest, a half-table for the G.C.P.M. and Glademade at STAPLE! 2010, and ideas for plenty of more comics that I’ll be submitting or self-publishing. I hope that everyone out there is having a great start to the new year, thanks for reading!
I sold my last copy of Froghead Hangover in a post-E.A.S.T. transaction so I decided to get more printed.
If you’re interested in picking up a copy, I dropped some off at Austin Books. Or, there are still some copies at Domy Books in Austin, or you can just send me an email – mark p hensel at g mail dot com (minus the spaces) – and I’ll mail you one for $2 plus shipping.
If you need some convincing, here’s a review at Optical Sloth, and here’s one at High-Low.
Hey y’all, Monster Show 4 opens this Saturday (Halloween!) from 7-9pm at Domy’s Houston and Austin locations, come check it out! There’ll be many, many fabulous and terrifying monster drawz by tons of talented creators, including the lovely Glade Whitworth.
Here’s the flyer, image drawn by Travis Millard:
Here you can get an all-in-one shot of my monster draws in process and a fraction of my new studio set up:
I’ve had this drawing table since the mid-90s, so please forgive the stickers. If you come to our house (Boongoo Studio) during this year’s East Austin Studio Tour, you’ll be able to see my whole setup!
Well well well. Another week has gone by and I’ve failed to post to my blog on Tuesday. Faithful audience, I apologize – Glade and I still haven’t settled in from our big move, and I’ve been working on drawings for the upcoming Monster Show 4 at Domy Books in Houston and Austin, which opens Halloween nite. Actually, I haven’t been working on the drawings so much as I’ve been playing Zelda for research purposes.
Here’s some original Zelda concept art by Katsuya Terada:
We just got back from our road trip to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Marfa Friday nite. It was a blast, I’ve planned 29388729075230 blog posts about it but we’ll see how many I actually get to. Glade and I just went to the Domy Books here in Austin, she dropped off a bunch of new cards and I dropped off five copies of Froghead Hangover (reviews here, here, and here). They’re two dollars, get them while you can!
The show that’s up at Domy right now is called Libres y Lokas, I think my buddy Anthony Romero would really dig it if he was still in town. I also got a really well-made local book called Observations & Daily Life by Haley McMichael, Important Comics by Dina L. Kelberman, and books of really kewl drawz by Lisa Hanawalt and Deth P. Sun.
