Hyperbroadcasts: Staple 2013 Recap, Rough House Release Party, and Farewell Books Kickstarter

I ended up going to Staple for a few hours on Sunday. Here’s a shot of Vortex on the table I was sharing with Raw Paw, Douglas Pollard, Alex Webb, Connor Shea, Tyler Suder, Gillian Rhodes, Brendan Kiefer, and Matt Rebholz:

The Rough House book, which we debuted at the show, looks amazing. Tons of great comics, printed in an assortment of two-color pairs on a Risograph, wrapped up in this offset cover by Doug:

Here’s a shot of Aaron Whitaker’s hilarious contribution about drunken snacking:

Aaron’s story is called “The Disappearing Food Truck.”

There’s going to be a release party tomorrow night at Farewell Books (the shop that’s taken over Domy’s former location). All the details are here on Facebook, I hope to see y’all there!

Speaking of Farewell Books, they’re raising money on Kickstarter to give their store a strong start.

Domy Austin was really important to me as an artist and lover of comics. It gave me a place to sell my work, get to know other like-minded Austinites, and flip through rare minicomics. This kind of space is vital for the creative community of our city. Plus Schmaltz sells delicious vegan sandwiches in the backyard. Travis Kent and Mikaylah Bowman, the owners of Farewell, know how to run a progressive book store and gallery from their days as Domy staff. I’m confident that they’ll make Farewell a fantastic resource for locals and visitors. Please help them out.

Staple! 2013

STAPLE! 2013 is this weekend. The Gold County Paper Mill won’t be tabling this year (all our Texas members are going to be in the same wedding).

However, I’m going to have a four-page comic in a new book called Rough House. Here’s a preview of my contribution:

Preview page of Oort Wars by William Cardini

Rough House is a two-color risograph-printed book of Austin (or Austin-related) cartoonists. I don’t have a full list but fellow contributors include Brendan Kiefer, Gillian Rhodes, Aaron Whitaker, Connor Shea, Doug Pollard, and Tyler Suder. The book will be sold at the table of its publisher, Raw Paw.

I hope that STAPLE! is a blast, I might stop by to check things out on Sunday.

Hyperbroadcasts

I’ve got a couple bits of news:

William Cardini Digital Prints Composite
If there’s an artwork or single comics page that you’d like to see me offer as a digital print, let me know.

I love the increasingly abstract and artificial texture of Cardini’s series…. It’s interesting to see a book done in the “mark-making” school of comics drawn entirely on a computer, as it heightens reader tension and makes the contents all the more alien in its coldness.

  • Here’s a somewhat abstract Vortex #3 preview page:

This is Page 13. Vortex #3 is also available in my online store, in a combo pack or by itself.

Welcome to 2013!

Let’s raise our crystal skull goblets to 2013 and the coming hyper-folk-sci-fi utopia! I hope that everyone had a happy new year’s.

William Cardini New Year Sketch
This is my first sketchbook page finished in 2013. I began it while chilling over the holidays and finished it today.

2012 was a year of upheaval, change, and growth.

Personally, Glade and I made some big choices. In the spring, we decided that we’re going to stay in Austin for the foreseeable future. In the summer, Glade opened Paper Party in Domy Books Austin and was able to move to part time at her day job in the fall. Domy Books Austin is now closing but Glade’s going to move Paper Party to a new spot at 1223 Rosewood. I’m bummed that Domy is going to be gone. Every time I went in there Russell was so enthusiastic about comics and would show me all the great new stuff that came in. He’s also been a great supporter and promoter of my comics. But I’m glad that Travis Kent and Mikaylah Bowman are carrying the torch with Farewell Books in the same spot.

2012 was a big year for my comics career:

Not everything was a triumph, however. I applied to the final round of the Xeric grant and didn’t get it. I’m still putting more money into my comics than I’m earning. I have several self-publishing projects that are stalled out.

I’m looking forward to experiencing what 2013 brings. My primary goal is to finish Vortex, put out the rest of it in minicomics, and explore the options for publishing a collected edition.

I’ve got some paintings and drawings in Surreal Landscapes, a show curated by my friend Cari Palazzolo. There’s a bunch of other awesome Austin artists in it also. There’s a reception this upcoming Thursday. Here’s the flyer:

Vortex #3 Release Recap

Thanks to everyone who came by the Vortex #3 book release at Domy Books this past Wednesday, I had a good time!

Vortex 3 release party at Domy

When Vortex #2 came out, I had a joint release party / reading with Melinda Tracy Boyce (she was putting out The Melinderly #1). We projected panels from our comics and performed them to an audience. I thought it was fun, but since then, I’ve been to signings here in Austin where the cartoonists just set up a table and personalized books for everyone who came up. I like interacting with people individually more so I thought I’d give it a shot (I also didn’t have enough new, non-Vortex comics to fill another reading). I dug it but I might switch things up again next time.
