24-Hour Comics Day 2011 Austin Recap

This past weekend was 24-Hour Comics Day. I spent several hours at an Austin event organized by Zach Taylor.

A sample page from Zach’s current webcomic, Bear Quest. I love how he does pixel art versions of each page.

I wasn’t there to work on a 24-hour comic – I just worked on a book-length comic, VORTEX, that I’m now about 3/8ths of the way through.

I’m not going to show y’all any more of VORTEX until the whole thing is finished.

The 24-Hour Comics Day event was fun (and productive – I finished [almost] four pages in the [little over] four hours I was there). I got to meet Jason Poland, who makes the webcomic Robbie and Bobby, IRL after many online convos.

This is a few panels from a Robbie and Bobby comic called “Wings”. Jason does all sorts of awesomely weird stuff like this in his strip, which he puts out several times a week.

I also met Austin Bedell

This is a comic from Austin’s side project Vidyagame Library, where he draws comic inspired by NES videogames.

… Chris Sweet …

This is a comic from Chris’s webcomic Effing Decaf. He also did a great mashup comic with Zach called “16-Bit Breakfast”.

… and many other awesome local comic folks. I’ll probably continue to work on my own projects during 24HCD2012 but it’s great to get to hang out with a bunch of local cartoonists.

It’ll be a fun time, check it out. They’ll be screenprinting t-shirts with one-color versions of my flyer at the fest.

“Please Save Maria Kondratiev” Art Show with Music by Katie Mullins and Zine Library

This Saturday, starting at 7pm, my friend Alison Kuo is hosting an art show at her space in Brooklyn called “Please Save Maria Kondratiev” with music and a zine library. The artist is Maria Kondratiev, here’s a drawing of hers from 2008:

The musician is Katie Mullins.

Because the show coincides with the Brooklyn Book Fest, Kuo is also organizing a zine library with chapbooks by James Yeh, illustrated by Andrew Bulger; interview and other booklets by Temporary Services; prints by Rand Renfrow; and comics by yours truly, Jak Cardini, Josh Burggraf, and Mike Miles of the Gold County Paper Mill; and others. I wanted to have a new zine but I didn’t finish it in time, so I sent a bunch of my old stuff, including the last issue of Catch Up.

Come check it out! There’ll be drinks and food, but please BYOB and bring your friends. The space, Darling House, is located at the corner of Broadway and Union – Lorimer JMZ, Broadway G, or a ten minute walk from the Lorimer L. Look for the glass door, ring top buzzer.

PACC this Sunday

PACC (the Philly Alternative Comic Con) is this Sunday. I wish I could be there this year but it’s not to be. Oh well, I don’t have any new comics to show anyway. Maybe next year. Pat told me, “Just save a dollar a day dude.” I’ll try, I’ll try.

To live vicariously through my blog, I’m going to take a brief break from showing y’all the prints for Glade and I’s show and post all the great promo art for PACC.

First up, we have Pat Aulisio:

Next, we have this dope poster by my man Josh Burggraf:

Josh is going to be debuting a new book, Kid Space Heater. I can’t wait to see it.

And finally, Pat brings it back to barfville with this postcard:

Anyway, since I can’t be there, any readers in the Philly area should go and have a great time. It’s this Sunday, August 14th, noon to seven at the Rotunda, 4014 Rotunda St.

Mini-Comics Day Recap

Mini-Comics Day at Dragon’s Lair was pretty good. Rather than work on a new mini, I just worked on Math Fiction Squared. I drew for four hours and got about halfway done with three pages. I’m almost done.

Here’s a preview shot I posted on my flickr last week:

Mark P Hensel Math Fiction Squared Preview

This image hasn’t had the red/blue anaglyph 3d effect applied to it yet (obviously). It’s also been rotated and flipped. I’m having a lot of fun experimenting with different custom patterns for this project. I want to go back and add the patterns to all my old comics, but although that probably won’t happen I’m definitely going to start using them more going forward.

Secret Prison #4 at MoCCA 2011

Mini-Comics Day is not the only thing happening this upcoming weekend – it’s also MoCCA 2011 in NYC. Although I was able to attend in 2008, 2009, and 2010, I won’t be there this year :’,’,’,’,'( (Although I can’t really be all that sad, because Glade and I’s wedding and subsequent honeymoon is the reason why.) However, one of my comics will be in attendance. Thanks to everyone’s support of Secret Prison in 2011 on Kickstarter, Pat Aulisio will have fresh, free copies of #4 at Table L5, which he’s sharing with Mike Turzanski and Tom Smo.

Here’s a preview of my comic for Secret Prison #4:

Pat will also have a bevy of other dope comics for your perusal, check out this blog post for deetz.

Mini-Comics Day at Dragon’s Lair this Saturday

Hey y’all, this Saturday, April 9th, is Mini-Comics Day! It’s like 24-Hour Comic Book Day, but less grueling, because you only have to commit to finish a minicomic, with no size or length restrictions.

Are the cartoonists participating in mini-comics day the mouse, the mousetrap, or the cheese?

Here in Austin, Dragon’s Lair (6111 Burnet Rd) is hosting a Mini-Comics Day event from 10am to midnight. Come by, I’ll be there drawing – and, if you’re allergic to cats like I am, be sure to take some loratadine before you walk in the door, cuz they have a couple feline residents. I hope to see some of y’all there.

Although technically you’re supposed to write and draw the whole thing in one day, I’ve already started sketching and brainstorming. Here are my sketches:

Here’s a preliminary sketch of The Two Heads of Murg Kraw. Sensitive plot planning notes have been redacted.

I feel like pirate yeti is pretty self explanatory, but to be specific, this is a SPACE pirate yeti (or pirate space yeti? yeti pirate space?). I switched pencils in the middle, so some lines are way thicker than other.

Awthum Fetht 6666

I know that I keep talking about this Glade and Mark comic, and it’s coming, I swear y’all, but other things just keep coming up that are time sensitive, like STAPLE! and now SXSW. Also, I have some other comics that I haven’t posted here that are even older, so I may post those first. We’ll see. So, please ignore my empty promises and I’ll stop making them.

Anyway, for the sixth year in a row, the Awthum Empire, producers of fringe, DIY and avant garde culture in Austin and beyond, is putting on their one-day music festival, Awthum Fetht. And, just like last year, I drew a flyer for it:

Also, if you’re a band interested in a flyer or other artwork, please feel free to contact me.
