FISTS Page 2

Last week I drew two comics pages. I tried to get three done but I ended up only having the stamina to pencil the third page.

Here’s the second page of the FISTS comic that I drew last week (you can see the first page here):

This comic and some other, older FISTS strips (from college!) will be published in issue #14 of the humor zine Smear Campaign.

FISTS Page 1

Back when I was in college I drew a comic for the Daily Texan (UT-Austin’s paper) called Fists: Free For All. My original premise, inspired by Krazy Kat and not too different from my current ATTACKS series now that I think about it, was to have each strip end with (or revolve around) one character hurling a gloved fist on a stick at another. Although I quickly abandoned that concept, I did, over the years, develop a set of regular characters and images that I kept coming back to, like the previously mentioned flying fists, a weird metal bat creature, the cigar-smoking frog, masks, and suited men who had to hold up their own lower jaws on a stick. After I graduated from college and got into Fort Thunder, my style changed pretty rapidly, and abandoned all of these characters except for, of course, the cigar-smoking Frog.

However, this past week, my buddy Natalia Ciolko asked me to do a two-page comic for the next issue of her zine Smear Campaign, and she was already reprinting some old FISTS strips, so I decided to do a whole new one.

Here’s the first page (I’ll have the second one up Friday):

Meditation

Here’s the comic that I did for last year’s STAPLE! Program Guide:

I was working on TRANZ at the time, this is an earlier version of the “meditate” page that made it in the final mini.

This past week I drew two pages of comics for the STAPLE! Program Guide.

Here’s a bit of the first page of my entry:

The Program Guide will be handed out to anyone who attends the indy media convention, where I’ll be tabling as part of the Gold County Paper Mill alongside a bunch of other cartoonists and exhibitors, including my buddies the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen and the Poopsheet Foundation (see who’s attending and where they’re sitting here).

Titanic Clash of the Shamen Page 1

Inspired by my lady Glade’s resolution to make one new card design each week of 2010, my resolution is to draw at least one finished page of comics a week, and document it here on this blog. I might not always be able to show the whole page, but I will at least show part of it.

So how am I doing so far? Well, I’m considering a week to be from Sunday to Sunday, so I finished a page last week and I’ve sketched out and plan to ink two more pages this week.

Last week I finished the first page of the collaborative comic that I’m doing with Josh Burggraf called Titanic Clash of the Shamen. Here are the first two panels:

I’m super stoked about this project, our goal is to have the zine done in time for STAPLE!.

2009 Recap

2009 was a great year here at the Hypercastle! Here’s some of the highlights:

  • I self-published two minicomics:
    • TRANZ, a collection of one-page shorts based around action verbs like “melt,” “grow,” “muliply,” and so on; copies available from me or at Domy Books in Austin
    • Froghead Hangover, a short autobiographical story about when I was living by myself in an apartment and had a run-in with a shaman; copies available from me, at Domy Books in Austin, or at Austin Books
  • I had my comics in issues of Smoke Signal, Taffy Hips, and the online zine hahaclever.com
  • I was in a few art shows, including Monster Show #4 at Domy and No More Worlds at Concertina Gallery in Chicago, which was picked as one of the top art shows of 2009 by Time Out Chicago (congrats to all the other artists and the curators!)
  • I participated in STAPLE! 2009 alongside the rest of the Gold County Paper Mill and in E.A.S.T. 2009 with my lady Glade Whitworth
  • I finally finished making websites for the G.C.P.M. and Glade (linked above)

2010 is already shaping up to be a great year, here’s hoping that it’ll blow 2009 out of the water! I’ve got several projects in work with some awesome and skilled creative people that I’ll be talking about as they manifest, a half-table for the G.C.P.M. and Glademade at STAPLE! 2010, and ideas for plenty of more comics that I’ll be submitting or self-publishing. I hope that everyone out there is having a great start to the new year, thanks for reading!

More Copies of Froghead Hangover Now Available

I sold my last copy of Froghead Hangover in a post-E.A.S.T. transaction so I decided to get more printed.

If you’re interested in picking up a copy, I dropped some off at Austin Books. Or, there are still some copies at Domy Books in Austin, or you can just send me an email – mark p hensel at g mail dot com (minus the spaces) – and I’ll mail you one for $2 plus shipping.

If you need some convincing, here’s a review at Optical Sloth, and here’s one at High-Low.

Catch Up: Louisville

This past week I finally finished drawing the first edition of Catch Up: Louisville.

Catch Up, a Gold County Paper Mill presentation, is the brainchild of Jak Cardini. Each issue will feature the combination of a poem and a drawing by a different writer/artist pair.

East Austin Studio Tour

Glade and I are participating in the East Austin Studio Tour this year as Boongoo Studio. We’re number 125 on the map, come check out our spaces!

Here are some shots of my studio:

As you can see in the upper left, I’ve got plenty of Gold County Paper Mill books left over from STAPLE! 2008, including Jak Cardini Achieves the Narratological Singularity, a book of J.C.‘s poems, and Impossible Objects, a collaborative book between me and Jak.

Here’s a detail shot. I’ve also got some color drawz, raw comix pages, and black and white india ink drawz.

Here’s my drawing space and something that I was working on.

Our good friend Alison Kuo came and did an installation in our living room! We’re also going to be featuring the artwork of Beverly Anderson and Aaron Flynn.
