Melinda is releasing the first issue of her quarterly full-color collection of short autobiographical and fiction comics, The Melinderly, while I’m dropping the next issue of Vortex! Here’s the full press release and here’s the Facebook event.
Secret Prison #666 is debuting this April at MoCCA 2012! This issue’s a little different from the previous ones – instead of single-page comics, it’s a bunch of double-page team-ups selected by editor Ian Harker and guest editor Pat Aulisio, the editors of RUB THE BLOOD (speaking of which, RUB THE BLOOD is now available in Yeah Dude Comics online store).

Pat and Ian paired me up with the bad-ass cartoonist Keenan Marshall Keller. We’re both total texture geeks but Keenan’s way more out there than me and is inspiring me to be grosser and more visceral with my drawings than I usually am. I’m loving what we’ve got brewing for SP#666! You can see what I mean about the similarities and differences in our styles in this drawing he did for the Monster Show at Domy Books:

Ian and Pat are raising funds to print SP#666 via a Kickstarter campaign.
They’ve already met their funding goal for their initial print run and now they’re trying to meet a secondary goal to get even more copies printed. Prizes include SP#666, RUB THE BLOOD, and an 1/8th page ad drawn by myself.
This past week I finished a two-page comic for Josh Burggraf’s sci-fi anthology Future Shock. Here’s a preview panel:

I’ve sold a stack of RUB THE BLOODs through online sales, thanks y’all! I’m saving a few copies for STAPLE! 2012 here in Austin. If those don’t sell, I’ll offer them in my online store again. Hey y’all, this post is late in the evening on Tuesday because I’ve been busy finishing the comic I made during Frank Santoro’s Comics Correspondence Course, coding an HTML shell for it, and uploading it to this site. The comic is called Moon Queen. Click the cover spread to read it:
I tried something different with the navigation. Because Santoro had us thinking about the spreads so much, I wanted you to be able to see both the spreads and the details. So on the index, you can see all of the spreads. Then you can use the next and previous buttons on the side to proceed through larger images of the spreads. You can also click on either half of the spread to see the page up-close. You can navigate between the page views but once you get to a new spread, you see it all at once. What do y’all think? It makes sense to me but I thought of it so I’m not be experiencing it as a first-time user would.
As some of you may know, I’ve been drawing all of my comics completely on the computer for the past couple years but Santoro had us draw everything in the class by hand (although I assembled the final comic in Photoshop). I’d been wanting to get back to doing some analog drawing so I was glad to take a break from the flickering screen. All in all, the process that Santoro taught us was fascinating. I learned a lot of things that you’ll see me experimenting with in future comics. If any of y’all are thinking about taking future sessions of Santoro’s class and are willing to try out a new approach to making your comics, I highly recommend it!

Also, I didn’t realize this, but 2012 is the 20th anniversary of Image. In honor of this, Ao Meng has a post up on the Daily Texan Comics blog that discusses the legacy of Image, the Brandon Graham and Simon Roy reinterpretation of Prophet, and RUB THE BLOOD. It includes a short interview with yours truly.
Tonight, from six to nine pm at the Philadelphia comic book store Brave New Worlds, is an art show of drawings done by contributors of RUB THE BLOOD that’re either related to the theme of the anthology or original pages.

VORTEX News
Whitey reviewed VORTEX on Optical Sloth on December 24th. He proclaims the battle to be “suitably majestic” and accurately leaves the gender ambiguous.
I snagged this from Whitey’s site because his scanner caught the weird primary color gradient that emerged from the printing process.
Also, orders made through my online store will now be shipped much more quickly. Thanks to everyone who ordered over the last two weeks, your orders will be shipping soon.
Site Update
Over the break I fiddled around with my site.
I updated the header so that the banner randomly changes every time you load a page, changed the splash image to a randomly selected one-page comic, streamlined the content, and drew a new favicon. Please let me know if anything breaks on you.
