Xeric Today, STAPLE! on Friday

Hey y’all, I mailed off my application to the Xeric Foundation self-publishing grant today.

Applying to the Xeric has been a goal of mine since I first read about it, so even if I don’t get the award, I’m glad I submitted to the final round. Good luck to everyone else who submitted – may the most deserving cartoonists win!

A drawing from Lars Martinson’s helpful posts about applying to the Xeric and self-publishing.

One resource that I came across while preparing my application was Lars Martinson’s ten-part post series “How I Self-Published a Graphic Novel” which details the steps he followed in publishing his book Tonoharu. Even though this is the last round of the Xeric there’s still plenty of useful advice about self-publishing in general in those posts. The two steps that I’m thinking the most about now are Part 4, where Martinson details saving up enough money to take a year off of his day job and give self-publishing a full-time try, and Part 10, where he thinks about what it’ll take for him to make self-publishing comics into a sustainable career. It’s an unfortunate fact that there isn’t much money in comics and I like how he deals with the reality of the situation without being hopeless.

In semi-related news, the Gold County Paper Mill will be tabling at STAPLE!, an Austin comics festival, this weekend.

STAPLE! is this Saturday from 11am to 6pm and Sunday from noon to 6pm. I’m going to have a more detailed post about what we’re bringing and what else you should check out on Friday.

News from the Holidaze: Austin Scene Report, VORTEX News, Site Update

Hey y’all, welcome back from the holidaze! A few things happened while I was getting too merry that deserve their own blog posts but I’m just going to sum them all up here:

Austin Scene Report

I wrote up a report on Austin’s comics scene for Frank Santoro’s column on the Comics Journal site.

Apologizes to anyone that I didn’t include. Please don’t take it personally, I was trying to be concise, comprehensive, and art comics centric.

VORTEX News

Whitey reviewed VORTEX on Optical Sloth on December 24th. He proclaims the battle to be “suitably majestic” and accurately leaves the gender ambiguous.

VORTEX #1 cover
I snagged this from Whitey’s site because his scanner caught the weird primary color gradient that emerged from the printing process.

Also, orders made through my online store will now be shipped much more quickly. Thanks to everyone who ordered over the last two weeks, your orders will be shipping soon.

Site Update

Over the break I fiddled around with my site.

Hypercastle site

I updated the header so that the banner randomly changes every time you load a page, changed the splash image to a randomly selected one-page comic, streamlined the content, and drew a new favicon. Please let me know if anything breaks on you.

I hope that everyone had a happy holidays, if that’s your thing. 2012 is beginning in a couple of days and I’m stoked about the possibilities of a new year.

I’ll resume regular posting next week but for now enjoy this photo of my fellow cartoonist Kyle Nolan standing in front of the EPCOT geodesic dome, sporting the Candy or Medicine t-shirt with my drawing:

Newly Burned Screens, the Complete Shaman Thunder, and some Meta Posting

Newly Burned Screens

Glade and I have an art show at Austin Books and Comics the whole month of August, where our prints will be hanging in the back issue room. I’m going to have two full-color CMYK prints and two screenprints, one that’ll be a single color, and one that’ll be two colors. I had my screens burned at Industry Print Shop and just picked up the screens today.

Here’s a shot of the screens in my studio:

New Screens

The theme for our show is hypercastles. I’m going to post images of our prints throughout the month of August.

The Complete Shaman Thunder

Since I finished posting the pages from Shaman Thunder last week, I just uploaded the whole thing to my comics page. Click the banner to read the whole thing from the beginning:

I’m proud of this comic. Josh Burggraf was a great guy for me to collaborate with because every time I got one of his pages in my inbox, it pushed me to try harder for my next page.

Meta Posting

I’ve been thinking about how I want to approach blogging, going back and forth for a bit now, and I’d like y’all’s help. In my years as a blogger, I’ve just posted my own art, posted folk-sci-fi content, and, with this site, mixed both together. In April, I decided that the two-to-four hours a week that it takes for me to write two blog posts should instead be devoted to drawing. That’s why you’ve only seen comic pages here and I’ve been talking more about folk-sci-fi on my Twitter feed. But, as Scalzi pointed out to me with this post, why should I invest a lot of time and thought into a site hosted by a company that may one day be permanently beached or become a ghost town?

So what should I do? Would y’all like to see me:

  • Continue to focus on posting my own comics or drawings here regularly, and leave other musings for other blogging platforms?
  • Return tomixing in my own stuff with musings, reviews, and artwork that inspires me?
  • Add a column where I roundup whatever things I find inspirational or interesting, like an expansion/curation of my tweets?

If there’s something I’m not thinking of, let me know that also.

Pardon the Pixelated Dust

Filed under: Admin — Tags: — Will Cardini @ 12:42 am

Hey y’all, please pardon the mess around this blog, I’m working on updating it but I’m too sleepy to finish it tonite.

I finished updating my main site yesterday, here’s a link to the home page, or you can reach it from this blog’s header. I added a bunch of old, rare, and out-of-print comics to the Comics section.

And of course if any of y’all notice any weird bugs or have any suggestions I’m all ears.

Gouache Experiments for No More Worlds at Concertina Gallery

I took most of the content from my old blogs and imported them to this site last nite, so please, feel free to browse the archives and experience some nostalgia. I’ve been blogging sporadically since May 2007 and started to blog at least twice a week since December 2008. I’ll be going through those old posts over the next several weeks and updating their formatting and the size and source of the images.

Last nite I also went to my Okaymountain studio to work on my drawings for the upcoming show No More Worlds at Concertina Gallery in Chicago, which is curated by Corinna Kirsch and Katherine Pill. I’m doing medium-sized (18″x24″) drawings that I’m coloring with gouache. I tried out a bunch of different materials because it’s been a while since I’ve colored something off of the computer. Here’s one of my gouache experiments:

In the end, I decided to do flat color with gouache and then add outlines and details with india ink. I’m going to do six drawings like that for the show which will replicate one of my MELT pages from TRANZ.

Here’s the promotional image for the show, Jolly Ranch by Alex McLeod:

Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

Following an investigative curatorial model, Concertina Gallery’s first exhibition inquires into the simple yet seldom insignificant gesture: the greeting. Although an invitation can take shape in a myriad of forms, the works in No More Worlds invite viewers to enter – through tactile engagement or with the aid of imagination – captivating yet unsettling environments. Featuring artists who use a variety of mediums, No More Worlds showcases works that deftly combine the fantastical and mysterious with elements of the everyday, reminding us that even our wildest ideas of new worlds are anchored in and mediated by our own experiences of reality. Reveling in the unknown surprises of the grotesque or the extraordinary sensuous qualities of the idyll, the impossible tableaux constructed by these artists hover between real and imagined worlds. These liminal environments give way to partially obscured narratives, both enchanting and monstrous.

I’m excited to be in this show alongside amazing artists and I wish I could be there for the opening. If any of y’all are gonna be in Chicago September 12th, be sure to check it out!
